What Are the Most Popular Travel Destinations Right Now?

From European classics to surging Japan to the always-aspirational Hawaiian Islands — here's where people are going in 2026 and why.

One of the most common questions I get isn't "where should I go?" — it's "where is everyone going?" Sometimes people want to follow the crowd. Sometimes they want to avoid it. Either way, knowing what's popular helps you make a smarter decision.

Here's what I'm seeing and reading heading into the second half of 2026.

Europe: still the dream trip

Italy, France, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Ireland, the U.K. — these destinations continue to perform because they deliver on every level: history, food, culture, scenery, and that hard-to-define sense of "this is a real trip." For financially comfortable travelers, Europe feels like a meaningful investment rather than just a vacation. The euro and pound are still strong, which means budgeting matters more than ever — but for the right traveler, Europe is absolutely worth it.

Japan: still surging

Japan continues to attract travelers who want something truly different — safety, extraordinary food, ancient temples alongside ultra-modern cities, bullet trains, nature, and a sense of once-in-a-lifetime discovery. Tokyo ranked #1 and Osaka #5 among Priceline's most popular international hotel destinations for summer 2026. The crowds are real, but so is the experience.

The Caribbean and Mexico: value powerhouses

Cancún, Riviera Maya, Punta Cana, Jamaica, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Aruba — these destinations remain perennially popular because they combine warm weather, short flights from most U.S. cities, and strong all-inclusive inventory. If you want a beach vacation without a complicated itinerary or a big budget, this is where to look.

Hawaiʻi: aspirational, and worth it

Hawaiʻi is still one of America's great dream vacations — especially for honeymoons, anniversaries, family trips, and retirement celebrations. It's not the cheapest beach destination, but what it offers is unique: U.S. convenience, world-class natural beauty, genuine culture, and an island variety that most people underestimate.

The key that most people miss: Hawaiʻi isn't one destination. It's four very different islands, each with its own personality, best seasons, and ideal traveler profile. Choosing the right island — or the right combination — matters more than almost any other decision you'll make.

Emerging destinations worth watching

Expedia's 2026 destinations of the year include places like Okinawa, Sardinia, Phu Quoc, the Cotswolds, and San Miguel de Allende. These are for the traveler who wants something distinctive, less crowded, and genuinely off the beaten path.

My recommendation

Before asking "where is everyone going?" ask two questions first: What's the right destination for you? And is now the right time to go there?

The answers to those two questions will point you somewhere much better than a trending list. That's where I come in — reach out and let's figure it out together.
